Down at the Sound

I was born and raised in Wilmington, NC which is right on the coast. Our family home was right on the Intercoastal Waterway. My great grandparents had this home first and we bought it when I was 10 years old and remodeled/added on. It was so much fun being as we called it "down at the sound". My grandparents lived right beside us, directly on the water. We had our swimming hole at the dock, and could jump in the boat and take off for the day. I have so many memories of growing up there with my brother and my cousins, and neighbors that we grew up with.
My brother and his wife have bought this home from my mom..years back and made this their home with their 2 little boys, J & D. It gives me a lot of comfort to know their boys will get to experience growing up "down at the sound". Although, it will be different for them, my grandparents do not live down there anymore, but I know they will have so much fun, swimming and fishing with my brother and sister in law..and family that visits too. Here is a view from my brother's house.
A lot has changed "Down at the Sound" since my brother and I grew up here. The house in between his house and my grandparents old house was not there. My grandfather sold that lot years back. I used to cut grass all the way from my house to my grandparents. A lot of the houses were affected by hurricane Fran and had to be re-built. My grandparents old house was one of the houses affected, but my grandparents had already sold the house a year or so before. Luckily my brother's home was not affected. A lot of the same families live there..some have moved away. One of the girl's we grew up with bought a house right beside my brother's and she and her husband are raising their family there too. It's neat to see everyone grown with their families experiencing more memories.
It really is a sweet place to live. It's so neat to now be able to visit there and reminisce on all the memories from my childhood. All the holidays spent with family. The bike rides all over the place, the summer's, especially the summer's!! Masonboro Island and camping! This was, The House that built Me...as the song goes, but mine was "Down at the Sound".
